Newsletter 3/13/2020

Hello everyone,

as we are preparing for the upcoming school closure, I wanted to write personally to you all. While this is an unsettling time for all of us with a lot of unknowns, we will get through this together. Learning will work the following way:

I will post two videos on my blog every day. One for Math and one for our unit of inquiry. Please let your student watch these videos and do the tasks with me. Ms. Lazenby will post assignments on her blog for English but for Math as well. Please go to both of those blogs daily. This is a learning curve for all of us and since our school culture thrives in interaction and language learning, this will feel weird for everyone at first. You can contact me via email should you have any questions.

I wish you and your families good health and all the best for the upcoming weeks,

Antonia McCoy

Coronavirus update- school closing

Hello ICSAtlanta Parents and Staff,

As you may know, at his press conference a few hours ago, Governor Kemp announced that all Georgia districts could choose to close their schools to help slow the spread of Coronavirus. While we currently have no confirmed cases on either campus, ICSAtlanta will follow the recommendation and advice of the Governor’s office and close school for two weeks, beginning Monday, March 16th and continuing through Friday, March 27th.  We will remain open for students and staff tomorrow, Friday March 13th in an effort to afford our parents adequate time to find childcare and/or prepare their students for distance learning.

In order to better prepare for our students’ extended leave and distance-learning, ICSAtlanta staff, you will report to work on Monday, March 16th.  Beginning on Tuesday, March 17th, only 240, 230, and 205-day employees will report to ICSAtlanta campuses.

Parents, we will be sending out additional information regarding your child’s online, distance-learning schedule by tomorrow evening. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teachers should you have any questions or concerns.

We wish you all good health and safety during the upcoming weeks.

Sincerely,
Tanya Parker
Executive Director

Coronavirus update

Hello ICSAtlanta Community,

This is a very difficult and trying time, and we acknowledge and understand your fears and concerns for the safety of your children and families, especially given the unprecedented (in most of our lifetimes) events taking place around the world and in our communities.  In an effort to alleviate some of your concerns, I wanted to reach out with another update on ICSAtlanta’s efforts to promote safety and prepare for the weeks ahead.

Healthy Practices

As we have done since the beginning, we are sanitizing our school several times per day, washing hands/ providing hand sanitizer, and continuing to restrict sick students and staff from attending school. This being said, as general classroom sanitation supplies are becoming more difficult to find, if you are willing and able to donate Clorox wipes and/or hand sanitizer (preferably, large bottles), please feel free to drop them off at the front desk of either campus.  Thank you to those who have already sent in supplies.

Long-term School Closure Days (LTSC Days)
We have developed a long-term school closure (LTSC) plan for when it becomes necessary to close school.  This LTSC plan has been explained to our teachers and practice sessions on the technology required for online learning have been provided to them as well.

In the event of a school closure, on the first full-day of the closure, all parents will receive an email by 9 AM with specific information regarding your student’s online-learning, “classwork”, and homework expectations.  Please plan ahead, to the greatest extent possible for your family, to have the resources and supplies needed to ensure these LTSC days are efficient and effective: computer/laptop/tablet with audio capability (microphone or video cam not needed), ability to connect to the Internet (wifi or device data), your child’s login information (most importantly for Google Classroom and/or Clever), paper, pencils, and if at all possible, a printer (please make sure to ensure you have enough ink/toner).  If you do not have Internet connectivity, please reach out to your child’s teachers to make them aware; we will do our best to find alternative arrangements for work completion.
Please note that we cannot roll out this LTSC plan unless school is canceled.

Additional Large-Group Cancellations
In an effort to eliminate large-group activities, the following events will be cancelled or modified:
Milestones Parent Education Night will be  pre-recorded and sent out to all parents.
Donuts with the Directors (spring session) is cancelled.
PYP Student-led Conferences for 3rd through 5th graders are cancelled.
Chick-fil-a biscuit sale on the 27th is cancelled.
The UC drama performance is  postponed (new dates to be determined). Drama practices, for now, will continue.
Please note that all student-only, in-school activities will continue as scheduled  as long as school is still in session (After School Program (ASP), tutoring, clubs, etc.).

Though we completely understand, share, and empathize with your feelings of helplessness and frustration, we ask for everyone to make a concerted effort to be patient with each other over the weeks and months ahead.  Our staff is committed to supporting our entire ICSAtlanta community through these stressful days.  It is times like these when family and community are most essential.

Sincerely,
Tanya Parker
Executive Director

We also did a sound quiz where the students were divided into two groups and had to guess different sounds from everyday life. They loved it and it was harder than we thought! In Math, we are still measuring with non-standard measuring units, are counting to 120 by ones, twos, fives, and tens, and are practicing to tell time by the full and half hour analog and digitally. We will continue to practice these skills next week.

Hello everyone,  Bildergebnis für light and shadow clipart

another week comes to a close and we are in full swing learning about light and sound.

This week, we focused on shadows although we could not go outside to trace our shadows yet due to the rain. We will do that next week. We did shadow crafts, learned about how distance and time of the day influence shadows and did different experiments with shadows. Next week, we will trace our shadows outside at different times each day and journal our observations. We will also connect this to Math where we will begin to learn about the full hour as well as measurement. We will talk about measurement in very general terms and will not measure with a ruler but rather with other units of measurement (unifix cubes, paper clips, cotton balls, etc.) to establish basic rules of measuring first (measurement units have to touch, units have to be same length, etc.).

In German Language Arts we talked about H,h this week (die Hose= pants, der Hase= rabbit, das Haus= house, der Himmel= sky, heiß= hot, die Haare= hair, der Hut= hat, der Herbst= fall/autumn, der Hirsch= deer, der Hund= dog). We will focus on K,k next week.

Hello all,  Ähnliches Foto

next week, it will be time for our annual Holiday Market and Chorus Night! It will take place on Friday, December 13 6-8pm in the LC parking lot! You will be able to purchase handmade items from students and also listen to the songs we have practiced with the students in both languages. We just finished our candle holders and are so excited to present them at the Market.

Our wax museum is coming up on Tuesday, December 17 from 8:00-8:30am. Join us and witness how much the students have learned this unit. Please start preparing for this at home as well. You can ask your child which character they want to be and come up with a costume. This week, we learned about George Washington Carver and will talk about our last character, Ruby Bridges, next week. By the end of next week, we will start practicing our skits and will prepare for the final assessment.

In Math, we keep working on addition and subtraction within 20 as well as adding and subtracting tens and ones within 120. We are also still counting to 120. In German Language Arts, we talked about the sound Au,au and will do Holiday and Winter vocabulary next week.

Have a great weekend!
